Shyam Barr - What is self-regulated learning? - Canberra

In this episode I am speaking with Shyam Barr. Shyam is is an Australian educator, author, keynote speaker, and researcher who specialises in self-regulated learning (SRL). He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Learning Sciences at the University of Canberra, where he conducts research on teaching practices that help students learn how to learn.

It was his book Educate to Self-Regulate: Empowering Learners for Lifelong Success and latterly his podcast by the same name that brought his work to my attention. His writing and conversations are of enormous help to anyone working within the IB curricula or those interested in how metacognition and self-regulated learning can be used to impact students’ outcomes.

We discuss:

  • His Living Room analogy for SRL

  • The relationship between ‘Metacognition’, 'Motivation', 'Cognition', 'Resource Management' and 'Emotion' in an SRL framework

  • Where a school starts once they've identified SRL as an aim for the year or next few years

  • Specific examples of how a department or school has implemented an SRL curriculum and what it looks like at the lesson, unit and year level

  • How Shyam gets around curriculum coverage concerns so that SRL is not seen as another policy item to be included

  • And finally, whether SRL complements all types of teaching and learning or is better suited to student-centred learning.

Thanks again to Shyam for chatting with me today and his ongoing work into what can be a very powerful lever both inside and outside the classroom.
